Information Products!?!? What are Information Products?

Strictly speaking, an information product is anything that conveys information like a book, report, audio recording or video. In the Internet context, the term refers to electronically deliverable, knowledge-based products. If it delivers knowledge and you can e-mail it to a customer or offer it as a downloadable file, then it qualifies as an information product.

That’s the techie bit over with!

What we are looking for are information products that either teach something or solve a problem… Why? Because these are generally the type of information products that will make you money… That’s what we’re here for isn’t it?

We’re going to be looking at the seven main types of information products, actually the largest areas. Keep these areas in mind when it comes to choosing your product, which we cover further on, as you’ll definitely want it to fall into one of these niches.

How to info: These are usually learning about someone else hobbies e.g. how to start beekeeping, How to draw cars, how to be funny, how to play the piano. I’m sure you get the idea…

Make money: These generally help people run their business and make money e.g. selling things on e-bay, opening a small business etc.

Save money: These can be guides to getting better gas mileage, reducing your mortgage or shopping for bargains.

Health and fitness: These cover weight loss, gain muscle or natural remedies. There will always be a market for these.

Self-help: These usually involve a lot of relationship advice e.g. how do I get him back or turn a friend into a girlfriend, but they do also cover self confidence or dealing with anxiety etc.

Training and skills improvement: Training guides for anything and everything from dog training guides to improving your Microsoft Office skills.

Travel and lifestyle guides: These are self explanatory and cover budget travel, luxury travel and adventure.

How To Sell Information Products?

There are various ways including fancy websites, but the easiest and most effective, which we are going to look at, is by using a one page sales letter where all they have to do is read and click the button… That easy!

The sales letter itself, which we have a whole section on later in the book, has the following basic structure:

A headline – This is a strong attention grabbing headline which we’ll show you exactly what to say to get the readers attention.

A story – This pulls the reader into the story and keeps their interest and builds up their desire for your product by shouting its benefits using bullets. Not literally!!

Call to action – This is the conclusion to the story and consists of a strong call to get the reader to buy.

So they’ve bought into your heading, they’ve bought into your story and most importantly they’ve bought into your call to action and yes…they want to take action… What then?

It’s as simple as them clicking the order button and they are automatically taken to a Clickbank secure order form, where payment is made and money is collected. After transcription the script delivers your digital information product to your customer and you never have to touch it… It’s all automated… How great is that!

Choosing A Niche That’s Right For You…

Remember the saying: “Jack of all trades, master of none”, this I not where you want to be. Always keep your original goal in mind, building various income streams from a few information products. If you’re really clever about it you’ll realise that if you only work in one niche you can  grow  your  customer  list,  promote  your  products  and  affiliate products in the same niche, which is much more effective.

You want a niche where people are already buying information products. Never worry about competition when you see others selling in your niche, you want to find out what’s selling and sell them more of the same, but better or offers more value to them.

So choose a niche from those mentioned above, something you find interesting or could see yourself working in.

Researching a Potential Product

You have now chosen your niche, be that the make money niche or health and fitness niche and now you need to decide on a product i.e. what within those markets are you going to sell? Any ideas? How about something that’s going to make you money?

How do you know if it’s going to make you money…? Simple… If it’s selling at the moment, if there are people spending money buying that will make you money.

The easiest way to research the market is to research your potential competition. We like to call this “competition spying” and it’s expected so don’t feel bad about it.

With “competition spying” all your market research has been done for you and it’s so easy to see which ones are making money… Clickbank makes it easy for us and lists everything in order… Great isn’t it.

The main retail outlet site for digital products is Clickbank and looks something like the screenshot below.

To spy on our competition or rather research our potential product we need to go to the market place found at the top of the screen.

Click on Marketplace and it will take you through to another screen (see below) which will show you all the categories or niches (Categories) that you can choose from and sub-categories which helps you narrow your search.

For this example lets choose a product that teaches us to train dogs. The niche for this product would be “Home & Garden” and your sub category would be “Animal Care & Pets”.

You’ll notice that Secrets to Dog Training “Updated” is listed as number one, which means it is the most popular product within your search criteria. This tells you it is definitely selling and doing well.

There are also Clickbank codes which you will notice below the product (the numbers in green). These also give you important information about the site and how it’s performing i.e. is it making money.

Here’s how to decipher the Clickbank codes:

Total $/sale: = How much the affiliate will get paid per sale. In this case its pretty good… They’ll get $30.65 per sale.

Avg %/sale: = How much percentage the affiliate will get from the sale. In this case its 69%. That means every time someone buys from their link, they get 69% of the purchase price and the product owner gets 31%.

%/refd: = This shows how much of the sales are from other affiliates. In this case 79% of his sales come from other people.

Grav: = This is the most difficult to understand – as a general rule this shows you the lowest number of affiliates he has, in this case a minimum of 68.71 affiliates are promoting his product.

So you probably wonder why or how this is going to help you if you’re not an affiliate for these sites. What it does tell you firstly, is if they are making any money. Secondly it tells you what sort of percentage people in that niche are offering, you’re product should be similar to attract affiliates or they would just go where they can make more money. It also tells you how much competition there is for those sorts of products. In this case the site has 68.71 people promoting it.

Remember competition can be good.

Okay, so we’ve selected a niche, researched a potential product and should now have a better idea of what that product is actually going to be, but before we make a final decision… We need to do some keyword research(Coming Soon) ^.^…

Tips For Selecting A Domain Name

Lets move onto tips for selecting a domain name… A domain name is basically a “.com” name and allows internet browsers to find your website… It’s as simple as that.

Simple… Yes… But there are a couple of things to keep in mind when selecting your domain name:

1. Make sure the name is directly related to your product.
2. Always get the “.com” extension.

When we come to buying our domain name and choosing a hosting company to use… there are quite a few out there, but I use Go Daddy it does everything for you perfectly…

Keywords

I’ll shortly give you more info below as to why we should use our keywords in our domain name… Well the right reasons why we should use them… But as a rule the tips above are the most important to stick to…

Contrary to what many people think… Placing their most important keywords in their domain name does not guarantee their site will be ranked higher in the search engines…

Unfortunately… Google does not consider the keywords in the domain nor does it boost the search results of those sites which include given keywords in the actual domain name…

That’s not the end of it… There is a massive advantage to using your most important keywords in your domain name… Its just not directly linked to Google…

If you don’t know… The most important factors for Google rankings is the pages “reputation”… That’s got nothing to do with what the page is actually about, but more about the words contained in the text of the incoming links to your web page…

Links

So what’s the bid deal…? As other sites link to the page you’re trying to position high in Google, the fact that your keywords are contained in the domain name may cause the webmasters to use those words in the text of the links… And that is a big deal…!

Okay that gives you a good idea of how to structure your domain name… Most people when selling e-books aren’t too concerned with using their important keywords in the domain name and instead use something that will stand out and is relevant to their product…

Food for though… Isn’t it…

Registration

Remember, it takes 72 hours for your site to be on the internet. So don’t leave this for last.

Let’s go back to Go Daddy and register our first domain name…

Once on the Go Daddy website… You need to set up a new account… I’ve highlighted this link with a red arrow above…

They required quite a bit of information here… Really everything except your shoe size… At least you only need to go through this once…

Okay, so we’ve finally got through all the questions and registered with Go  Daddy… Remember to make sure your email and telephone number is correct… If not, customer support have no way of contacting you if something goes wrong…

Selection

Now, you’re logged in… You can search the domain name inside your account or go back to your home page where you can see which domain names are available. Start with your first choice…

OR

Fill you your first choice for domain name… In this example I’ve decided to look for the domain name www.iproduct.comRemember always go for “.com”

So you’ve filled in your first choice and hit the Go button… In this case my first choice of www.iproduct.com has already been taken… which it kindly tells us in bold black at the top of the page…

So we have two choices here… We can either go back and try another domain name… Or if we scroll down the page… We are given a few different options that are available… Its always good to have a look at these even if you decide not to go with any of them as they give you a few ideas that you might not have thought of…

Let’s have a look what additional domains they’ve suggested from our search for www.iproduct.com

I’ve decided I’m going to go for the www.iproductonline.com… It’s similar to what I was looking for and does the job I need it to do…

As I said previously you can keep searching until you’ve gone through your list, but it might be an idea to take note of any that stand out in the additional domain section on your searches… Just in case you want to go back to them a the end…

Now  one  thing  to  point  out  is… When  the  above  page  comes up… Registration and checkout options, you’ll notice that the length of registration automatically comes up as 5 years… You really don’t need it for 5  years as you get the option to keep the site on an annual basis…

So select the drop down arrow and choose the 1 year option…

Next… It’s ”Your Privacy & Domain Protection”, you can skip this part by click “Continue”.

Hosting

This is also where we need to select our hosting and email if needed… If you haven’t already got anywhere to host your site or an e-mail address that relates to your product… I say relates to your product because you don’t want to be using a hotmail or yahoo account… It just isn’t professional…

So, if you don’t already have these I suggest getting them all from the same place…

All you need to decide is which option suits you needs… I.e. the deluxe or unlimited option…

Once you decided and selected your option, we’re ready to proceed…

Click on continue… This then takes you to a breakdown of exactly what it is you’re buying and the total cost… $26.05 for the year… Not bad at all to stat your own business…

Once you’re happy with everything… Scroll down to the payment section and select your payment method that best suits you… And the checkout now…

You’ll be taken to a secure checkout… Where you get a final check of everything… If you’re happy… Select checkout now at the bottom of the page…

Complete the payment details and… Well done… You’ve just bought your first domain… Remember to print out the receipt… It’s an eligible business expense…

And there’s more…..
